Fairfax County Park Foundation: Family Recreation Area at Lee District Park
Family Recreation Area at Lee District Park
The Family Recreation Area is located on Telegraph Road in Franconia within the 138-acre Lee District Park. This dedicated outdoor recreation area engages children in physical activity and sparks their imaginations with creative play. It brings families together with old-fashioned and thoroughly modern play elements that are accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. There are two phases to the development.
Phase 1 is complete with these amenities open.
- The Treehouse overlooks a forest and stream valley. Enter from gently-sloping ramps accessible to wheelchairs. This structure is from a generous bequest from the Elisabeth Guerry Newton estate.
- A one-of-a-kind Treehouse Seating Area was funded via memorial contributions from Springfield Toyota, friends and family of landscape architect, Robert W. Good, in honor of his life.
- Our Special Harbor encourages interaction and provides families and children of ALL abilities a place to enjoy water and have fun together. Disabilities vanish amid the Chesapeake setting of the 7,000 sq ft, zero-water-depth sprayground. The result of a public private partnership where Our Special Harbor was designed and built by the Joey Pizzano Memorial Fund and the Park Authority, it operates free of charge. Funding was also provided by the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities under the federal Developmental Disabilities and Bill of Rights Act.
- Support facilities includes restrooms and changing rooms.
- A temporary picnic shelter is a gathering and entertaining space.

Phase 2 includes Chessie's Big Backyard. Help from the entire community is needed for completion of these areas:
- A treehouse-themed playground will incorporate slides, swings and other equipment specially designed for use by all children, including those with special needs.
- The Carousel with old-fashioned charm will be thoroughly modern in design and fully accessible.
- A family picnic area with covered shelters will offer a place to take a break from the action to enjoy a picnic.
Opportunities exist for major donors to sponsor and name elements of the facility which will be enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of children and family members each year. Contact us at 703-324-8582.
